YouPose: Dynamic Anatomical Figures for Sculptors and Body Artists

Sculpting, moulding, casting and finishing, there’s no quick way to do it all but there are processes now available to help you increase your output or help to meet a tight deadline.

Combining digital sculpting software and the manufacturing capability of a 5 axis router now allows sculptors an almost endless variety of base figure options to begin their sculpture. The software that we use is Zbrush, Daz 3D, Poser, Modo, Mudbox and Mayka.

Every figurative sculpture starts with the base body and pose. Once these have been decided upon we generate an unclothed 3D digital model. This can be male or female, tall or short, thin or portly, adult, child, infant or teenager, you choose.

You choose the pose you want for your sculpture. Send us 2 or 3 images (photos, magazine shots, your digital art) of someone in the correct pose and we will match to your reference. Exact body measurements can be used, if you wish. Once the model has been created we send you a 3D turntable movie and still images of the form for your feedback and alterations if needed.

The body is then cut out of white M grade EPS or Blue XPS foam. You can choose to have:

  • Full body
  • No head
  • No hands
  • No Feet
  • Torso only
  • The choice is yours

The foam pieces are packed in a cardboard box and shipped to you unassembled in 6 pieces: usually

  • Head (if required)
  • Torso
  • 2 Arms, with hands (if required)
  • 2 Legs, with feet (if required)

We cut a 20mm trench in the middle of the foam body parts as a starting point for your steel armature. The foam body can then be glued together around the steel armature and is ready to apply the plasticene clothes, accessories, head, hair and hands with your signature surface finish. The volume, and hence the weight, of the plasticene needed for the sculpture is greatly reduced.

The time consuming prep work is done for you, which means the anatomically correct proportions and symmetry or asymmetry have already been verified. Arm and leg lengths match on the right and left sides, muscles are all in the right places and can be as defined or smooth as you want. All you have to do is the fun stuff, sculpting the detail.

The sculpture is all your own work, all we have done is supplied your base figure, and saved you time, money, weight and materials. We’ve been assisting bronze artists, wardrobe departments and costume designers utilize this process for the past 5 years, and you can use it too.

Now the fun part begins………….
