Julie’s Picks GCFF 2013

More stars, more special guests, bigger masterclass, more after parties, Cool Japan and pop culture & film art exhibitions than ever will be highlights of this year’s Gold Coast Film Festival.

GCFF 13 is being staged at Birch Carroll & Coyle at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, Broadbeach and the full program of films and events can be downloaded at gcfilmfestival.com. My theme this year will be all the zombie comedies, Turkish and Norwegian films and meeting all the special guests & you can meet them too! Don’t miss all the Free Workshops (FW) . I’ve listed some below but there are more!

18 April THU 7pm (Red Carpet 6pm) Opening Night Film ‘Future Folk’ looks like a hoot with lead    actor/singerJay Klaitz performing at the event and across the opening weekend. Bluegrass singing alien heroes – I’ve got to see that!
19 April FRI 1pm Micro Budget Filmmaking - Filmmakers Jason Trost and Lucas Till (All Superheroes Must Die) talk about how they make films on a $20,000 shoe string. USA FW

The Animals with Attitude artists are hard at work preparing their pieces for the official Koala Trail Launch. See all 21 Koalas at Victoria Park, Broadbeach from 1pm Friday 1 March to Sunday 3 March. They then make their way to locations all over the Gold Coast. ‘Animals with Attitude’ Koalas are on their way to artists.

21 Koalas and 18 Artists are preparing for the inaugural Animals with Attitude Gold Coast Sculpture Trail.

John Cox’s Creature Workshop is currently engaged in this major Public Art Project  with proceeds from the Koala Auction going to support the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Fund.  We’ll keep you updated with dates & locations. To find out more log on to: Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary


JA in USA

Julie has just returned form the Association of Science and Technology Centres conference, ASTC 2012, in Columbus, Ohio.

As well as meeting with associates at the conference Julie meet with colleagues and venues in New York, traveling to half her meetings by bicycle. We are now looking forward to touring ‘How to Make a Monster’ throughout Canada & the USA 2013-15.

‘Animals with Attitude’ GC Sculpture Trail – Expressions of Interest

 Animals with Attitude GC Sculpture Trail   Expressions of Interest

SWELL Sculpture Festival 2012 is the launch pad for the  ‘Animals with Attitude’ Gold Coast Sculpture Trail.

To be held March – April 2013 this exciting new Public Art Project will see the Gold Coast come alive with a trail of larger than life size Koalas distributed throughout the Gold Coast and Hinterland. Businesses are invited to sponsor the works which are expected to draw big audiences. Artists are invited to submit designs and will receive a fee to complete the works if their design is chosen.

John is the designer and creator of the Koalas and is very excited to be involved in such an engaging project, with funds raised going to aid the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Foundation.

SWELL Sculpture Festival runs until this Sunday evening so get on down to Currumbin Beach and see the Koala up close as well as 51 fantastic sculptures from Australian and international artists.

Grafton Region Gallery is hosting ‘How to Make a Monster – the art and technology of animatronics’ from 22 August to 21 October. With fun workshops and activities for all ages, loads of school groups already booked to experience Monsters, free creative workshops in Clarence Valley libraries, and even a Monster dress up musical concert, it is going to heaps of fun. Tonight is the Opening Night of 2012 Gold Coast Film Festival with the Australian Premier of ‘Iron Sky’ being a SELL OUT. There is a repeat screening Saturday 28 April so get your tickets and find out what all the buzz is about.

James and Oliver Phelps ”the Weasley Brothers” will introduce Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 thanks to Supanova Pop Culture Expo, a cultural partner of the Gold Coast Film Festival, running April 21-22 at the Gold Coast Convention Centre. The film screens at Birch Carroll & Coyle Australia Fair Cinemas in Southport on Saturday 21 April at 8.30pm. Tickets are $12 and can be bought under the Australia Fair session times at www.eventcinemas.com.au

The screening is set to sell out fast, with fans encouraged to come in Harry Potter themed costumes to celebrate the film and the Harry Potter franchise.
