‘See Life’ at SWELL2015

The install is complete and the event is fantastic!

John’s piece ‘See Life’ is a star attraction at Swell Sculpture Festival 2015. The work stands 2.2 meters high and has 510 individual LED lights programmed to produce a story of environmental care and wonder.

It is one of 55 works by local, national and international artists on display at Currumbin Beach until 20 September. ‘See Life’ lights up from 5pm – 7am each night so is entertaining visitors 24 hours a day. Be sure to get down to the beach to enjoy this wonderful event.

National Museum of American Illustrators

The National Museum of American Illustrators is located in Newport, Rhode Island. John has been a fan of American illustrators  JC Leyendecker, N.C Wyeth, Howard Pyle, Maxfield Parish, and Norman Rockwell for forever. We had visited the Norman Rockwell Museum in Connecticut 14 years ago so the opportunity to see the largest collection of work by the artists who inspired him was very exciting. Visiting in the off season meant we needed to book a private tour and it was worth every penny as we received a personal tour from the museums founder and director Laurence Cutler. We stayed much longer than we were meant to and had more fun than we could have imagined, but still, five and a half hours was just not enough time to take it all in.

Below is a photo of John & I in front of the original JC Leyendecker painting ‘The Dancers’, painted for a 1930’s Arrow Collars advertisement. John has owned a print of this since he was in his 20’s and had it framed for me for my 50th birthday party – the dance party of the 1/2 century! I got a little teary standing in front of the original. Also pictured is John & I with our gracious host Laurence Cutler (standing in front of a Maxfield Parrish) and us walking the Cliff Walk in the snow.

New GC Cultural Center Revealed

It was very exciting to be at the announcement of the winning design for the new Gold Coast Cultural Precinct last night. We had the opportunity to speak with founding Director of Melbourne based ARM Architecture, Howard Raggatt, about his colourful and engaging winning design. To be constructed in stages, the multi coloured, multi level Art Gallery is aiming to be ready in time for the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018.

You can view the winning plan, and the other 2 finalist submissions, at the Gold Coast Arts Center. They are all wonderful concepts that were selected from the 75 entries submitted to the international competition. We were amongst many arts, professional and community members consulted during the concept development stage and look forward to this exciting project being a major stepping stone in the Gold Coast’s cultural profile for the future.
